World Mental Health Day was celebrated on 10 October this year. This internationally recognised day aims to raise awareness and advocate against the social stigma surrounding mental health.
Recently, the Blue NRG team has been actively fundraising for Beyond Blue through their Big Blue Table Event. We raised a total of $440, which will support Beyond Blue’s Support Service. This service provides free counselling, mental health information, and referrals to anyone in Australia via telephone, email, and web chat every day.
Our team has also shared their personal tips and practices for maintaining mental health this October and beyond. We hope these insights will help anyone seeking new ways to improve their mental wellbeing, whether in the workplace or working from home. Here are their tips:
Making Time for Yourself
The most common theme was the importance of setting aside personal time after work. Our team members expressed that they like to disconnect from screens in different ways. Whether it’s meditating, listening to calming music, or cuddling with pets, it’s crucial to take a moment for yourself. One team member shared, “I make sure to make time for me. Meditating, listening to calming music, cuddling my dogs, and getting off my phone.”
Creating Boundaries and Routine
With hybrid working still common, establishing clear boundaries between work and home can greatly impact mental wellbeing. “I separate my home office from the rest of my house. When I finish for the day, I turn my PC off and don’t go back in there until my next shift.” one colleague explained.
Furthermore, a structured routine will allow yourself to shift into work mode and create a productive environment, especially if you struggle working with distractions at home. “Establishing a morning routine, time-blocking my day, and making sure to take my lunch away from my desk and go for a walk” are some ways our team members stay grounded.

Engaging in Physical Activity
Staying active is a great way to improve and maintain your mental health. Going for a walk, hitting the gym or dancing can significantly reduce stress. After exercising, it’s important to sustain your body with nutritious foods to help refuel and recover effectively. Cooking can also be a rewarding hobby, that allows you to create healthy meals and enjoy the process of nourishing yourself. “I go to the gym, walk the dogs while listening to a podcast, and I cook,” shared another team member.
Social Connections
Maintaining social connections is vital. Connecting with friends and taking time for ourselves is great reminder to pause and prioritize our wellbeing after a busy week. Regular catchups with friends and self-care days are popular among our team. “I make sure to catch up with my friends weekly. Once a month, I also like to have a self-care day where I go to the park, make some food, bring a book and a journal, and listen to music in the sun.”
The 8-Minute Rule
A unique approach shared by one of our team members is the “8-Minute Rule.” When someone is having a tough mental health day, they can reach out and ask for just 8 minutes of someone’s time. It’s a way to signal the need for immediate support and connection.
The month of October has allowed our team an opportunity to reflect on our mental wellbeing and practises. By fostering meaningful connections and prioritising self-care, we can all contribute to a healthier, more supportive community. Let’s continue to support each other and prioritise our wellbeing every day.
